A Day in the life span: Visiting High Schools

Hello world! As a member that is new of web log team, we am so excited to fairly share numerous of my day-to-day experiences as an Assistant Director of Admission at USC. When I speak to my buddies and family about my job, they often ask questions like ‘what do you are doing on a daily foundation?’ or ‘do you have actually to work in the summer?’ I’m hoping that through my monthly improvements to this web log, you’ll get an improved concept of what we do every day as admission counselors.

So let’s start with today’s. This i woke up at the Courtyard Marriott in Vienna, VA morning. My very first visit began at 7:45 am. That may appear early with a, reasonable to others, but I can inform you, this at 7:45 have always been, I was tired (7:45 am in VA feels like 3:45 am in CA…oy. early morning) The truth is, my trip from Los Angeles was likely to get to Reagan National Airport at 3:43 pm yesterday (to be exact.) But instead, due to a cockpit that is wet (I kid you not,) my flight was delayed three hours. Luckily, my very first school see this morning constantly has coffee waiting I was especially appreciative today (Thanks Sheila! for me, and) I visit, at this school it’s a different format which consists mostly of me answering questions although I usually give about a 30 minute presentation to students when. Thankfully the students came prepared. They asked great questions and I also think I only stuttered a times that are few.

I had time to kill before my second visit and luckily found a Peet’s Coffee on my way. We stopped for many morning meal and a coffee refill. In a perfect world i arrive about 10 moments just before a call, but usually i am about 15 to 20 minutes early. Fortunately, my car’s air conditioning kept me cool while I ate my bagel and drank my latte. Today I happened to be also able to talk with some counselors that will be constantly a highlight of my day. University counselors are always high in details about students, their schools, and usually life as a whole. Additionally reminds me of my high school times where We invested a complete lot of time on my counselor’s sofa.

Just How coffee that is many can you find in this image?

My visit that is third today to a school I’ve never visited before. There were about eight students present plus one was even using a USC t-shirt. This student, let us call him Brandon, told me about his recent trip to campus so we’d a moment to gush over how pretty USC is. I love sharing common USC experiences with pupils, specially whenever I’m overseas.

Finally, between my third and fourth visit this early morning, I became able to grab a 6′ veggie delight as I drove to the following school that is high. Upon checking in, my picture from last year’s see appeared in their computer, a nice reminder of the relationships we continue to construct at each school.

After my fifth and final check out today, I returned to my resort, debriefed my time in the shape of notes and headed to the closest Starbucks to catch up on some work. My instinct that is first is to check on my email. Oh look! I got a message from Brandon I mentioned thanking me for my visit and asking a question about something. Love when that happens!

I really hope to satisfy many of you as We carry on my travels! If there’s anything else you wish to know about our experiences visiting your school that is high feel free to leave concerns within the comment section and I will do my far better return to you soon!

Fight On!

Mythbuster: we have to show the admission counselors that USC is my top choice

The Myth: Attending college fairs, visits and tours will increase my chances of admission.

The Verdict: Not at USC.

Every late August/early September, you can find 5 or so emails in my inbox every morning using the topic ‘Introduction to USC.’ These emails usually have a similar format that is general. ‘Hello Jessica- just desired to let you know that I go to ABC senior high school, we play baseball and I also can not wait to utilize to USC. I have always desired to be described as a learning pupil in the Marshall School of company.’ Ok great, but exactly what am I supposed to state? Good fortune along with your baseball season? Every winter, I get comparable emails with the subject ‘Update.’ Students tell me personally how their first semester went, they got the lead role in the spring musical, and that USC remains their very first choice. Awesome, but chances are I already saw your senior grades (or will soon) year.

At USC, we do not track students’s interest outside for the actual application for admission decision purposes. Going to our programs is a way that is wonderful find out more about USC, but gonna an event or sending e-mails like those we described will not boost your chances of admission to the college.

As admission counselors, it shmoop do my essay is true with any help you may need that we are your main contact as you go through the admission process at USC and we are happy to assist you. However, pupils only benefit from trying to us whether they have specific questions- especially questions to which they can not find the clear answer on line. I believe pupils often confuse this role and make the assumption us and initiate a conversation in order to have a shot at admission that they HAVE to email.

So how do you show us that you’re enthusiastic about USC? as opposed to spending your time emailing us with updates, it is in your very best interest to use the period to get results on your response to the application question ‘Describe your academic interest and exactly how you want to pursue them at USC.’ You should discuss specific resources and possibilities you want to take advantage of at USC. in the place of emailing us your list of activities, fill the activity Summary out thoroughly. A thoughtful and very carefully assembled application stands out more than an introduction e-mail or an invitation to coffee.

Keep in mind that some educational schools may track demonstrated interest. Some colleges may expect all pupils to reach away to them, while others may expect students in the geographic area to visit campus. The notion of demonstrated interest varies, if it is factored into an admission decision so you should always ask a school if and how they track interest and.

At the end of the day, we do wish to see that you’re thinking about USC and you are really considering being a student here. The way that is best for you yourself to articulate this interest is during your application.
